Research Group 1-2. Integrated Research on the History of Marine Products in the Waters around the Japanese Archipelago

Collection of Shimane University Library

Since 2007 we have held an annual meeting for the study of history of marine products. In addition to strengthening the research partnerships and networks that have emerged from these meetings, this project will build on the results achieved so far in order to investigate the historical, geographic, and folkloristic features of the human/fish relationship in the waters around the Japanese archipelago in an integrated way by adopting the geographic area as a unifying perspective. The keyword here is “history of marine products,” a concept that affords a broader perspective than that of fisheries history; it constitutes a “history of the human/fish relationship,” which it approaches both historically and in terms of folk culture.

The research group’s tasks are:
  • (1) to form a research network for the history of marine products and disseminate relevant information;
  • (2) to divide the topic into regions and eras and to study each using resources including the Fisheries Systems Materials held mainly by the Institute for the Study of Japanese Folk Culture, Kanagawa University;
  • (3) to arrive at an integrated understanding of the features of the various regions and eras in terms of the history of marine products (the human/fish relationship).
Under task (3), four concrete outcomes are anticipated:
  • ⅰ.An understanding of the history of marine products specific to the waters of the Oyashio and Liman currents (chiefly the northern waters)
  • ⅱ.An understanding of the history of marine products specific to the waters of the Tsushima current (chiefly the Japan Sea and East China Sea)
  • ⅲ.An understanding of the history of marine products specific to the waters of the Kuroshio current and Seto Inland Sea (chiefly the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea)
  • ⅳ.An interdisciplinary understanding of the history of marine products specific to the waters around the Japanese archipelago (chiefly East Asian waters)
